Welcome to the Greens Pollies' Pay website.
The site tracks Australian politicians' pay, including base salary and allowances.
It was created and is maintained by NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon.

Pollies' Pay in a Nutshell

You hear a lot about what politicians get paid and the perks they receive. But just how much does your local MP earn? What does a Minister get paid?  What allowances do MPs receive and are they justified? It's no easy task to lift the lid on exactly what MPs receive in pay and perks. The system is complex and information difficult to find, especially in NSW.

The Greens believe the public has a right to know. We've undertaken the research and calculated what each MP is entitled to receive in pay and allowances.  We have published these estimates since 2004. While we have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this information, the system is complex and we cannot guarantee the figures are 100 per cent correct. The Greens will continue to campaign for a fairer system of remuneration for MPs, and to call for a full disclosure of MPs salaries and allowances to be published on parliamentary websites.

Federal MPs Pay

The current pay structure for Federal MPs is based on a base salary which is determined by the government. Then there are the many added extras depending on offices held and where the MP is located. These at least are determined by an independent body, the Remuneration Tribunal. More information on the Remuneration Tribunal and the latest determinations can be found here.

NSW MPs pay

The base salary for NSW MPs is pegged at $500 less than the annual salary for an MP in the Commonwealth House of Representatives. There are many added extras in the form of allowances, which vary depending on where the MP is located and what offices they hold.  These are determined by the NSW Remuneration Tribunal - the latest determinations and information can be found here.

Superannuation for MPs

Superannuation is just one issue in a long line of reforms that are needed to bring the Parliament more in line with community expectations.

In 2008 it has been estimated that balanced super funds lost close to 20 per cent on average, recording their worst annual return since compulsory super began. While this has been devastating for many, the majority of MPs continue to receive a generous public pension scheme, at a continuously rising cost to the public.
